Father John Brosnan (1919–2003) was the Catholic chaplain at HM Prison Pentridge for nearly thirty years, from 1956 until his retirement in 1985. In this role, he provided religious services and pastoral care to prisoners and their families, earning a reputation as the "Knockabout Priest" for his dedicated service.

Brosnan became widely known during the case of Ronald Ryan, who was executed at Pentridge in 1967. Brosnan served as Ryan’s chaplain, spending the final hours with him and administering last rites at the gallows. He was a staunch opponent of the death penalty and publicly supported campaigns seeking clemency for Ryan.

Upon his retirement, he was succeeded by Father Peter Norden. Brosnan’s legacy continued through organizations supporting prisoners and young people, most notably the Brosnan Centre, which grew out of the "Four Flats" initiative in Hawthorn to provide housing and support for ex-prisoners transitioning back into the community.

Taken in 1981 for the publication H.M. Central Sub Prison Pentridge: Life Behind the Bluestone Walls from the 1800s to 1980 (1) , it was ultimately omitted from the final printed edition.
