Bluestone Challenge
The Bluestone Challenge began at Pentridge Prison in 1984 as an annual sporting event designed to promote fitness, morale and positive engagement among inmates.
Established as part of the prison’s broader sports and education program, this event brought prisoners together with invited sporting personalities to compete in a series of physical events.
By 1987, the event was described in media coverage as the “third annual” Bluestone Challenge. Teams were made up of inmates and visiting athletes competing side by side in activities such as sprinting, swimming, weightlifting and boxing. Participants were selected from within the prison population, and the day was structured as both competition and spectacle, with sponsors supporting the event and all competitors receiving medallions.
Across the late 1980s and into the early 1990s, the Challenge continued as a morale initiative.
Visiting athletes during this period included Lester Ellis, Stan Longinidis, Robert DiPierdomenico, and Craig Starcevich. In later years, women from Fairlea Women’s Prison also participated.
