Winchester 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine
.png)

This Winchester Model 1873 carbine was manufactured around 1888 and imported into Victoria by firearms dealer James Rosier, whose initials "J.R." are stamped on the frame. It was issued to prison staff at Pentridge Prison and also saw use at Melbourne Gaol, as indicated by the marking "MG" with a broad arrow and the number 5.
Chambered in .44-40 with a 20-inch barrel, the carbine was valued for its high magazine capacity and fast lever-action, ideal for use by guards—not for firing, but for presence and control. The engraved number "86" on the carrier block likely linked the rifle to a specific guard or area within the prison.
Well-preserved and showing wear patterns consistent with decades of institutional use, this rifle reflects the long-standing role of firearms in Victoria’s correctional system. It was decommissioned in the 1950s, with some sold to the public before the remaining stock was auctioned in 1980.
In private collection.
