Broad arrow shoe
.png)

This leather shoe was excavated from the former Pentridge Prison in the Melbourne suburb of Coburg. At least 300 shoes were found in a pit thought to date to the 1860s. It is likely that inmates were making shoes for their own use, and for sale. This shoe features the broad arrow symbol, which signified a convict*.
